My first solo exhibition is coming up next week at the Steenbock Gallery here in Madison, WI. The photographs on view will be from the Decomposing series. The exhibition opens on Wednesday, January 4th, and closes on Friday, February 3rd. An artist’s reception will be held on Friday, January 13th, 6:00 – 9:00pm.

Artist Statement

Photography, to me, is a means of exploring the world. I like to travel, and
I am always excited when visiting a place I have never been before. Even if
it is a place I have visited several times, I am always surprised that there is
still something I have never discovered. And I use photography to capture
these experiences.

In mathematics, to decompose is to express in terms of a number of
independent simpler components, be it a matrix, a vector, or a measure
space. The purpose of decomposition, in general, is to break a complex
idea into small, easy-understood concepts. Instead of perceiving the world
as a whole, I fi nd it fascinating to just look at the elements of it, and thus
the creation of the Decomposing series. In this series, I applied the idea
of decomposition to architecture photography. Not only do I pay attention
to the forms and shapes of the interior of buildings, I also choose the light
sources carefully so that the interior is luminous in a certain way.

I have been working on this series since 2009. All the photos were taken
with medium format cameras on black and white fi lms. After I developed
the fi lms, they were then scanned, digitally processed, and printed on photographic papers*.

The Steenbock Gallery is located at 1922 University Ave, Madison, WI 53726. It opens Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

*I used to use inkjet printers. But for this exhibition, I worked with Burne Photo Imaging, and the photographs were imaged on a LightJet RGB photographic laser printer on Fuji Crystal Archive matte photographic paper processed in RA-4 photographic chemicals. Each photo is 17 x 17 inches (24 x 24 inches with frame by Douglas Art & Frame).
